“Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore” – Andre Gide
I had never been on a cruise ship before (unless you count the Spirit of Tasmania ferry in Australia) and it was quite the experience. I was blown away at the size of the ship and it turns out it wasn’t even one of the big ones!!
The Carnival cruise went from Florida to Freeport and Nassau in the Bahamas. The food was amazing (“So I can order whatever I want from the menu, even the lobster??”), the entertainment was fun and I spent a fair bit of time zonked out by sea-sickness tablets. It was something about being on a really big boat that made me so sick, I never have had any trouble on a small boat.
Although I enjoyed myself, I met some nice people and it was really nice to have a few days of not having to drive anywhere, I am not putting cruising high on the list on my favourite way to travel. It’s too commercialised for me. You are limited in what you can see when you get into port due to time restrictions and I found the whole experience a little too gluttonous that made me a little uncomfortable. I am glad that I tried it though, but I might save the next one for when I am old and crippled and can’t carry a backpack around the world anymore.
